Netflix and PBS to the Rescue: ‘Sesame Street' Now Streaming in Glorious Mediocrity

The financial wizardry of Sesame Workshop must have hit rock bottom when they decided to sign on with the twin beacons of streaming mediocrity, Netflix and PBS. Gone are the days of the beloved Muppets captivating children's hearts on the hallowed grounds of public television; now they must mingle with the likes of teen dramas and endless baking shows.
One can only imagine the boardroom meeting where this deal was struck. "We're hemorrhaging money faster than Big Bird can say 'alphabet,'" someone must have said, while others nodded solemnly, their eyes darting to the nearest exit. In a desperate attempt to stay afloat, they've sold out to the streaming giants, ensuring that Elmo and company will now be interspersed between ads for dubious products or, worse, PBS pledge drives.
In the end, perhaps this is a symbiotic relationship of the lowest order. Sesame Workshop gets a lifeline, and Netflix and PBS can now boast about their educational content. But at what cost? The sanctity of childhood innocence traded for digital pennies. Let us hope that Big Bird and friends survive this new era of streaming with their dignity intact, though one suspects they might soon be seen in 'Elmo's Next Top Model' or some such nonsense.
