The Senate's GOP, in a bold display of their undying love for gasoline fumes, are revving up to throttle California's electric vehicle mandate. Apparently, in the grand tradition of American democracy, a simple majority vote is just fine when it comes to choking the life out of clean air dreams.
But wait, don't Democrats and the nonpartisan GAO have a say? Nope, not when the filibuster is on the line, apparently. It seems the rulebook gets conveniently flexible when it's time to wage war on electric cars. Imagine the outrage if they tried this with, say, tax cuts for the wealthy.
So here we are, watching as California's breath of fresh air is potentially snuffed out by a vote that's as democratic as a Soviet show trial. It's a battle of wills, where the will of the many is crushed under the iron heel of tradition. Just another day in the circus known as the U.S. Senate.
